2021 autumn Zheng Wei Tie Guan Yin: elegant fragrance, mellow taste and a yellower liquor.

Tea Profile

At a glance: 2021 Autumn · Tie Guan Yin oolong (Anxi) · our A+++ grade · 20g to 500g

  • Dry leaf: Tightly rolled, semi-ball shaped leaves, as is typical for this kind of oolong.
  • Aroma: Elegant.
  • Liquor: More yellow than Xiao Qing.
  • Taste: Mellow, with only minor astringency.
  • Aftertaste: Sweet, with good saliva production.
  • Good to know: Zheng Wei leaves are fixed around 11am to noon the next day, earlier than Xiao Qing. We suggest new TGY drinkers start here.
  • Best for: Daily cups of Tie Guan Yin oolong; a comfortable start for novices.

Brewing Guide

  1. Use a gaiwan or small pot, about 5–6g per 100ml.
  2. Heat water to about 95°C (203°F).
  3. Rinse once quickly and pour the rinse away.
  4. Steep 10 seconds for the first infusion so the leaves can open, then 5–10 seconds, adding about 5 seconds each time.
  5. Pour into a fair cup before serving.

These numbers are a starting point. Try shorter or longer steeps and see what you like best.

Storage

Keep it sealed and airtight, away from light, heat and strong odors. Refrigeration helps keep the fresh floral character; let the bag reach room temperature before opening so no moisture gets in.

About the Leaf

Not every bag shows these, but you may notice them:

  • Some fine pieces: normal for rolled oolong and harmless.
  • Leaves open up a lot: the rolled leaves expand to whole leaves, so a small amount fills the pot.
