XiaGuan "Te Ji" (Special Grade) Tuo, a 100g Puerh Sheng Cha (Raw Tea), is an exceptional series that began in 2003 with the aim of surpassing the JiaJi tuo cha in quality. The "Te Ji," meaning "Special Grade" and denoted by the characters “特级,” utilizes tea materials of a superior grade compared to those in the JiaJi series. Recognized in the market as "TeTuo," this series was officially renamed in 2016 to “特沱,” an abbreviation of “TeJiTuoCha.”

Packaging and Design:

  • This tea is distinguishable by its trademark featuring a "Pine tree and Crane" printed on the wrapper, a symbol of its quality and heritage.
  • Available in various packaging styles, including simple wrappers and paper boxes, the "Te Ji" series offers versatility in presentation, with weights available in 100g and 250g options.

Taste Profile:

  • The higher grade of tea materials results in a more astringent flavor than the JiaJi tuo cha.
  • It opens with a fragrant aroma and a rich mouthfeel, particularly noticeable in the first half of the tea session.
  • The tea exhibits a pronounced bitterness and maintains a high level of smokiness, characteristic of its bold profile.
  • Both HuiGan (the returning sweetness) and ShengJin (saliva production) occur swiftly, enhancing the drinking experience.
  • However, since 2011, there has been a shift in the series, with the smokiness and bitterness becoming more subdued, making its flavor profile more appealing to a broader range of consumers, including those new to puerh tea.

2023 XiaGuan "Te Tuo"

The dry leaves smell like smoky ham, camphor and caramel, while after a rinse this smell became more like brown sugar and tamarind. The tea brew has a medium, thick, and smooth texture. The taste is reminiscent of a pine campfire, vegetable broth in a cauldron with slightly sour and savoury notes. The tea leaves a sweet and savoury aftertaste in the mouth.

I used 5g leaf in 100ml gaiwan with boiling water. This lasted me 6-7 brews on average. It would be better with some high notes, but overall a solid tea.

A promising tea

This is a simple yet strong tasting tea. For lovers of young sheng this has a lovely bitterness and strong astringency when pushed hard with long steeps and 100c water. Typical xiaguan hints of smokiness some floral hui gan and strong vegetal notes. Ridiculous value for money for an easy to brew no hassle aheng that i believe would age beautifully. Will push out a good 6/7 infusions with 3/4 of them being very good. I would recommend a yixing at least to drink while its young to tame some of that bitterness and astringency.
