Tea Profile

At a glance: Wuyi rock oolong (yancha) · Medium roast · our 1st Grade · Sample 9g / Bag to 108g / 12 Bags / 12 Mini Boxes / Box

  • Dry leaf: Tight, sturdy, dark brown leaves with an oily luster.
  • Aroma: Long-lasting.
  • Liquor: Clear orange-yellow.
  • Taste: Mellow, thick and refreshing sweet.
  • Good to know: Wet leaves show red edges, the 'green leaf with red edge' look.
  • Best for: Stepping up your oolong experience; a good next step for a newcomer who wants more depth.

Brewing Guide

  1. Warm a gaiwan or small teapot and add about 6–7g of leaf per 100ml.
  2. Use water at 100°C (212°F).
  3. Give the leaves one fast rinse.
  4. Start with 5–10 seconds, then add roughly 5 seconds per round.
  5. Decant fully into a fair cup each time.

Treat these as a starting point and adjust to your taste.

Storage

Store sealed in a cool, dry, dark spot away from strong smells. The roast keeps it stable, so the fridge is not needed.

About the Brand

In 1983 the Wuyi Tea Science Research Institute succeeded in propagating the original Da Hong Pao mother bushes, and in 1985 the first packaged Da Hong Pao was launched under the "Wuyi" trademark, one of the earliest registered for Wuyi tea. Wuyi Star Tea Co., Ltd. acquired the "Wuyi" brand in 2003 and carries on its production. Its teas come from more than 1,235 acres (7,500+ mu) of company-owned gardens, including the Jiulongshan garden, certified USDA Organic, EU Organic, JAS Organic and China Organic.

About the Leaf

You may see some of these; they vary from bag to bag:

  • Some stems and broken pieces: normal for hand-sorted loose oolong, and they brew just as well.
  • Darker, glossier leaf: this is the roast, not spoilage.
