8582 (1985 recipe, grade 8 leaf) is the bigger-leaf member of DaYi's numbered sheng family: more stems, more body, and a natural sweetness that only deepens with age.

Tea Profile

At a glance: 2008 · Sheng (raw) puerh · 357g cake · grade 8 leaf · Menghai Tea Factory

  • Compression & dry leaf: It is pressed into a 357g cake. Look for grade 8 leaf and well-formed threads in the dry leaf.
  • Liquor: In the cup it is typically amber to orange-amber for sheng of this age.
  • Taste: With age, a sheng like this may develop a rounder, more mellow character, depending on storage.
  • Mouthfeel & body: An older sheng like this may feel softer and rounder in the mouth than a young one.
  • Aftertaste: After swallowing, a mild sweetness tends to come back in the throat (hui gan).
  • Best for: improving your tea experience. Take your time with it — a good choice once you are no longer a novice.

Brewing Guide

  • Water: fully boiling, 100°C (212°F).
  • Steps:
    1. Add tea (about 5g per 100ml).
    2. Rinse once: cover the leaves with boiling water for about 5 seconds, then discard. Put the lid on and let the leaves rest for about 10 minutes to open up.
    3. Steep for 10–15 seconds for the first rounds, adding about 5 seconds each round.
    4. Pour into a sharing pitcher.
    5. Serve. Sheng puerh resteeps well for many rounds.
  • Treat these as starting points rather than fixed rules. Try high or low pours, fast or slow, and brew in different seasons to find the method that suits you. Brewing the same tea well in any year, season, weather or place takes practice, and that skill is the real goal.

Storage

Keep the cake ventilated, cool and dry, away from sunlight and strong odors (kitchen spices, smoke). For long-term aging, paper or clay containers breathe better than sealed plastic.

A Note on Appearance

Not every cake shows these, but they can occur, especially in teas with more years of storage.

  • Bamboo powder (zhu fen): a natural sign of traditional bamboo-husk packing. In Guangdong's warm, humid climate, tiny bamboo insects can make their home in the husk, nibbling the husk and cotton paper wrapper while leaving the tea itself untouched. What they leave behind is a fine powder, seen only on certain teas and more often on aged ones. It is harmless to hygiene; a few strokes with a clean toothbrush or soft brush before brewing is all it takes.
  • Tea oil spots: yellowish spots may appear and can come from natural tea oils. They are not a flaw.
  • Torn wrapper: small tears or holes in the cotton paper may happen during storage and handling. The tea inside is unaffected.

Aged Daily Drinker

I love the clean, aged taste of this tea. It is displaying typical Menghai character, like drinking fresh river water, while having those deep aged notes as well. The brew has good energy and great longevity, meaning good quality of leaves.

I have enjoyed 9 steeps of this tea now. I use 3 steeps for the “me” size cup I normally drink. This tea has no astringency no harshness and no “bite” at all. This tea brew a light orange/golden color. It has a light citrus aroma. It taste like a very light green tea with the sweetness of honey to it. I found this to be one of the most enjoyable shengs that I have had. Definitely in the top three. I have the newer versions of this cake and hope they age as well. I was really surprised as this is a secondary code 807 of this tea. Very nice. I will probably buy another one of these.
