2020 spring Ya Shi Xiang from Fenghuang, Guangdong: an odd name for a floral tea.

Tea Profile

At a glance: 2020 Spring · Phoenix Dan Cong oolong (Fenghuang, Chaozhou) · our A+ grade · Sample 20g to 500g

  • Dry leaf: Long, strong threads.
  • Aroma: Floral, with an aromatic liquor.
  • Taste: A mountain-stream sweetness with a natural flavor that lingers.
  • Mouthfeel & body: Smooth.
  • Aftertaste: Long and lingering.
  • Good to know: 'Ya Shi Xiang' literally means 'duck poop fragrance'; the tea itself is floral.
  • Best for: Everyday drinking — a relaxed Phoenix Dan Cong oolong that suits novices.

Brewing Guide

  1. Measure about 6–7g for every 100ml of your gaiwan or pot.
  2. Bring water to about 95°C (203°F).
  3. Do one quick rinse to wake the leaves.
  4. Keep early steeps short (5–10 seconds) and lengthen by about 5 seconds.
  5. Empty the pot completely into a fair cup each round.

Use this as a guide, not a rule; play with time and amount until it suits you.

Storage

Store airtight in the refrigerator, away from strong-smelling food. Allow the bag to come to room temperature before opening.

About the Leaf

These can show up now and then:

  • Some stems and broken pieces: normal for hand-sorted loose oolong, and they brew just as well.

Quality according to the price

Definitely lower quality than the other Ya shi xiang Dancongs on the site, from the first brew until the last. The wet smell has some baked pumpkin and flowers in it, but the flowers soon disappeared after brewing, and it is not represented in the taste either. The baked pumpkin and some sweat potato taste is dominant, but not too strong. It is kind of closer to a green tea in behavior, some stronger brews early on but it gets weak for the 5-6th brew. I could taste and smell some green peas from the 4-5th brew. Overall, although it is a very cheap option, I wouldn't recommend it, better buy the one higher grade A++ or A+++, worth the price difference!
