2019 early-spring Mi Lan Xiang, where honey and a cooked sweet potato note come through in the cup.

Tea Profile

At a glance: 2019 · Phoenix Dan Cong oolong (Fenghuang, Chaozhou) · Sample 10g

  • Dry leaf: Dark, neat, tight threads.
  • Aroma: Honey-like, with a cooked sweet potato note, especially in the liquor.
  • Liquor: Clear.
  • Taste: Sweet and refreshing, spreading across the whole mouth.
  • Aftertaste: Lingers long.

Brewing Guide

  1. Warm a gaiwan or small teapot and add about 6–7g of leaf per 100ml.
  2. Use water at about 95°C (203°F).
  3. Give the leaves one fast rinse.
  4. Start with 5–10 seconds, then add roughly 5 seconds per round.
  5. Decant fully into a fair cup each time.

Treat these as a starting point and adjust to your taste.

Storage

Zip the bag tight and keep it in the fridge to protect the fresh fragrance. Let it warm to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation.

About the Leaf

You may see some of these; they vary from bag to bag:

  • Some stems and broken pieces: normal for hand-sorted loose oolong, and they brew just as well.

Great Beginner's Dancong or Daily Drinker for the Experienced

Excellent fresh orange zest/juice flavor base combined with mild baked goods/bread and florality that is powerful in the pot but not overwhelming in the mouth. Qi is energizing but not overwhelming. Many dancong oolongs have a bitterness issue, describable as an intense citrus zest bitterness, that is resolved through lower ratio brewing or very careful infusion times. John's offerings at KingTeaMall do not have this issue. I have brewed low ratio all the way to mega high ratio traditional chaozhou style and find that this tea is amenable to your desired brewing style. Although this definitely has a citrus zest bite to it, it is very mild and enjoyable. Personally, I prefer the more roasted dancongs like this one but this milanxiang or the yashi are both great dancongs for the beginner or the experienced as a great daily drinker. I'm looking forward to comparing this to the new 2020 milanxiang!
