The Iron Rust Glaze (铁锈釉) takes inspiration from the natural oxidation process that forms rust on iron surfaces, typically viewed as something that damages both appearance and functionality. However, when this effect is intentionally crafted into ceramic tea ware, it transforms into a refined and elegant creation, cherished by tea enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Created by Su Yipeng, a skilled ceramic and teapot artist born in 1967 in Chaozhou, China’s renowned porcelain capital, these tea cups showcase his decades of dedication to traditional Chaozhou wheel-throwing techniques. Su Yipeng’s artistic vision is centered on “discovering Chinese elements,” which he incorporates into his unique ceramic works, imbuing them with deep cultural significance and a distinct artistic style.

The Iron Rust Glaze gets its name from its resemblance to cast iron, and the pieces are characterized by a rustic, minimalist, and wabi-sabi aesthetic. The glaze is challenging to perfect due to the precise kiln temperature required for firing, resulting in a low success rate, which adds to its rarity and value.

Although the cups appear to have a uniform deep brown color, upon closer inspection, the glaze reveals intricate crystalline textures that vary from piece to piece. Some cups feature fine, densely packed granules, while others display larger, droplet-like patterns that flow across the surface, resembling molten wax drips.

Key Features:

Unique Iron Rust Glaze: The deep brown, iron-like glaze provides a rustic and understated elegance, offering a quiet beauty that resonates with simplicity and tranquility.

Handcrafted Artistry: Each tea cup is individually handcrafted, so there are variations in size, texture, and glaze patterns, making every piece truly unique.

Artistic and Rare: The low success rate during the firing process, combined with the artist’s craftsmanship, makes these tea cups highly collectible.

They are absolutely beautiful! Not too heavy either. If you're not used to the shape, your nose might touch the cup's interior if you're too greedy, haha. Beautiful and weighty-looking on a table, though!
