  • Series: Te Ji (Special Grade - Red Eye Version)

Description: The 2004 XiaGuan "Te Ji" (Special Grade - Red Eye Version) Tuo is an exceptional Puerh tea that epitomizes XiaGuan's commitment to superior quality. Launched in 2003, the "Te Ji" series was designed to surpass the quality of the JiaJi tuo cha. "Te Ji," which translates to "Special Grade," uses higher-grade tea materials, earning it the nickname "TeTuo" in the market. In 2016, the series was officially abbreviated to “TeTuo.”

Packaging and Trademark:

  • Trademark: The tea is identifiable by the unique "Pine tree and Crane" symbol on its wrapper, representing longevity and high quality in Chinese culture.
  • Red Eye Version: This version features a distinctive crane with red eyes, signifying its superior quality and higher price point.
  • Packaging Options: Available in various packaging styles, including simple wrappers and paper boxes, and in different weights such as 100g and 250g.

Taste Profile:

  • Flavor: The "Te Ji" series has a more astringent flavor compared to the JiaJi tuo cha, due to the higher-grade tea materials used.
  • Aroma and Mouthfeel: The initial sessions offer a fragrant aroma and a rich mouthfeel.
  • Bitterness and Smokiness: Notable bitterness and a high level of smokiness characterize this series. Both HuiGan (returning sweetness) and ShengJin (saliva production) occur rapidly, enhancing the drinking experience.
  • Evolving Profile: Since 2011, the series has evolved to have a lighter smokiness and bitterness, making it more accessible to a broader audience, including those new to Puerh tea.

Storage:

  • Guangzhou Natural Storage: This tea has been stored naturally in Guangzhou, allowing its complex flavors and aromas to develop favorably over time.

Background:

  • Te Tuo (特沱): Special grade Tuo Cha made from high-quality tea leaves, rich in tiny buds and young leaves.
  • Jia Tuo (甲沱): First-grade Tuo Cha, known for a higher ratio of young and large leaves.
  • Yi Ji Tuo Cha (乙级沱茶): Second-grade Tuo Cha, characterized by a high ratio of large and strong leaves.
  • Bing Ji Tuo Cha (丙级沱茶): Third-grade Tuo Cha, made from a mix of strong leaves and stems.
  • Da Zhong Tuo Cha (大众沱茶): Fourth-grade Tuo Cha, known for its rougher leaves and stems.

Conclusion: The 2004 XiaGuan "Te Ji" (Special Grade - Red Eye Version) Tuo is a premium Puerh tea offering from XiaGuan, distinguished by its high-grade materials and unique packaging. Its robust flavor profile, characterized by pronounced bitterness and smokiness, combined with a fragrant aroma and rich mouthfeel, makes it a notable choice for Puerh tea enthusiasts. The tea's evolution over the years to a lighter and more approachable profile broadens its appeal, making it suitable for both seasoned connoisseurs and newcomers to Puerh tea.

WIld, Lots of Character

This tea has a lot going on, and has a roughness that seems to characterize Xiaguan productions. Smoke, perfume, green peppercorn and there is still a vegetal edge to it. One thing is for certain: this tea is burly and has a strong effect. While not totally for me, I definitely come back to it.
