2024 early-spring Lao Cong Mi Lan Xiang from old bushes, roasted heavy, re-released after a December 2 update.

Tea Profile

At a glance: 2024 Early Spring · Phoenix Dan Cong oolong (Fenghuang, Chaozhou) · Heavy roast · our A+++ grade · Sample 7g to 1000g

  • Dry leaf: Large, robust, tightly rolled threads.
  • Aroma: Orchid with spicy undertones and honey-like sweetness.
  • Taste: Round with depth.
  • Mouthfeel & body: Thick, smooth and resilient.
  • Aftertaste: Strong and lingering.
  • Best for: Daily cups of Phoenix Dan Cong oolong; a comfortable start for those new to oolong.

Brewing Guide

  1. Use a gaiwan or small pot, about 6–7g per 100ml.
  2. Heat water to 100°C (212°F).
  3. Rinse once quickly and pour the rinse away.
  4. Steep 5–10 seconds, adding about 5 seconds each time.
  5. Pour into a fair cup before serving.

These numbers are a starting point. Try shorter or longer steeps and see what you like best.

Storage

Keep it airtight in a cool, dry place away from light and strong odors. No need to refrigerate; the roast keeps it stable.

About the Leaf

Not every bag shows these, but you may notice them:

  • Some stems and broken pieces: normal for hand-sorted loose oolong, and they brew just as well.
  • Darker, glossier leaf: this is the roast, not spoilage.

Great Value

Good tea: In the world full of oolongs that taste too close to green tea, it leaves me wanting something different. This tea smells of what I expect in a Mi Lan Xiang in the first 2 steeps, with the added complexity of hint of roastiness. The soup is round, and sweet. The best of all, for me, I can push it to 9 steeps without picking up any major hints of water taste.

Nice Mi Lan Xiang Dan Cong

The tea leaves smell like peaches, orchids and brown sugar. After a quick rinse, the smell turned to plums and lilacs. The brew was medium thick and oily with a pale gold colour. The tea soup tasted like peach and nectarine with hints of ripe papaya and pine resin. Even the empty cup smelled like orchids, lilacs and resin. The mouth finish had a sweet papaya taste with slight grapefruit rind bitterness. I used 5g of leaf in a 100ml gaiwan with boiling water. On average, a session lasted for 5-6 brews.
